A Tool and Cutter Grinding Machine (TCG) is a precision grinding machine designed specifically for resharpening and reconditioning cutting tools — end mills, drills, reamers, milling cutters, form tools, and broaches. Unlike surface or cylindrical grinders, a tool and cutter grinder has a highly adjustable wheel head that can be tilted and swiveled to grind relief angles, clearance angles, and complex rake geometries on multi-fluted cutting tools. For any workshop spending significant money on replacement cutting tools, a TCG pays for itself rapidly in tool life extension.
The key specifications on a tool and cutter grinder are table longitudinal travel, cross travel, and vertical travel (which together define the envelope of cutter geometry that can be addressed), grinding wheel size (diameter and width, with smaller wheels for bore access on internal features), and wheel head swivel range (typically ±45° on each plane, allowing the wide range of relief and clearance angles in standard cutting tool geometries). Max tool diameter determines the largest milling cutter or hob that can be accommodated. Many TCGs include a dividing head attachment for indexing multi-fluted tools.
Machine City stocks used tool and cutter grinders from Deckel (Germany), Cutter Master, Quaser, and Taiwanese manufacturers. Any toolroom, regrinding facility, or machine shop with significant end mill and drill consumption will recover a used TCG's cost in reduced cutting tool expenditure within months of commissioning.

Buyer’s Guide
The wheel head spindle is the most critical component. Run to full speed and feel for vibration at the spindle housing. Any vibration translates to poor surface finish on the ground flute.
Confirm the wheel head swivels through the full rated angle (typically ±30° to ±45°) and locks solidly at any angle. A loose wheel head clamp will allow movement during grinding, ruining the relief angle geometry.
Verify longitudinal, cross, and vertical travels are sufficient for your largest planned cutter. Check each leadscrew for backlash — precision TCG work requires backlash-free table movement.
Many TCGs are sold with or without a dividing head, wheel dressing attachment, and universal vice. Confirm exactly what attachments are included, as they add significant capability and cost.
A DRO on the three linear axes is a major productivity aid for TCG work, enabling precise tool clearance angle settings without dial reading errors.

Confirm the installed grinding wheel is appropriate for HSS tools (standard aluminium oxide) or carbide tools (diamond or CBN wheel). A carbide cutting tool must never be ground with a standard corundum wheel.
