Browse used HMC machines — horizontal spindle, APC, BT50/HSK63 taper, Fanuc/Siemens. Ideal for high-volume prismatic parts. Pan-India availability.
A Horizontal Machining Center (HMC) orients its spindle horizontally, which means chips fall away from the workpiece under gravity — a significant advantage for long-run, high-volume production of prismatic parts like transmission housings, hydraulic manifolds, and engine brackets. HMCs almost always include an Automatic Pallet Changer (APC) that allows one pallet to be machined while an operator loads or unloads the other, dramatically cutting non-cutting time and enabling near-continuous production.
The defining specifications on an HMC are pallet size (400 × 400 mm for small parts up to 800 × 800 mm for large housings), the spindle nose to pallet center distance (which limits maximum workpiece height through the APC), and spindle taper (BT50 or HSK63A for HMCs handling heavy cuts). Controller brand matters for programming capability: Fanuc 300i and 310i are standard on Japanese HMCs, Siemens 840D on European machines. Pallet changer type — rotary vs. linear shuttle — affects maintenance requirements and floor space planning.
Machine City sources HMCs primarily from Japan and the USA, where automotive supply chains replaced equipment with newer models. Brands we regularly stock include Okuma MA-Series, Mazak HCN, Makino a-Series, DMG Mori NHX, and Doosan HM. A machine that originally cost ₹1.5–3 crore new can often be acquired for ₹40–80 lakh in good working condition, making used HMCs a high-value upgrade path for shops moving from VMCs to cell-based production.

Buyer’s Guide
Confirm the pallet size and swing-over-pallet dimension match your largest workpiece including fixtures. The APC mechanism must clear the fully loaded pallet at all positions.
Run several APC cycles and watch the pallet locating pins engage and disengage. Listen for hesitation. Check hydraulic clamping pressure and confirm pneumatic seals are intact — a misaligning APC is expensive to overhaul.
HMCs take heavier cuts than VMCs. Verify spindle taper (BT50 or HSK63A) matches your tooling. Run the spindle at full speed with a test bar and confirm runout is within tolerance.
Check all axes travel fully without interference. Confirm the servo drives respond without error codes. Check ballscrew backlash with a dial indicator on all three linear axes.
Many HMCs include through-spindle coolant for deep-hole drilling. Verify the high-pressure pump is functional, internal lines are clear, and there are no leaks at the spindle rotary union.

HMCs produce large chip volumes in continuous production. Confirm the chip conveyor motor runs without binding and the coolant recovery/filtration system is intact.
If accessible, check the spindle hours meter in the controller diagnostics menu. Machines above 30,000 spindle hours on an older frame deserve extra scrutiny on spindle and guideways.
Most HMCs include a built-in B-axis (pallet rotation). Verify the B-axis indexes and clamps precisely using a dial indicator. Any looseness in the B-axis clamp will cause angular errors in multi-face machining.
