Browse used air compressors for machine shops — reciprocating & screw type, 5–50 HP, various CFM and tank capacities. Pan-India availability.
An air compressor is essential support equipment in any machine shop — powering pneumatic chucks, ATC mechanisms, air-blast coolant, and pneumatic clamping on CNC machines, as well as powering hand tools, grinders, and spray equipment in the general shop. Industrial compressors fall into two broad categories: reciprocating (piston) compressors, which are the most common in small-to-medium shops, providing high pressure at moderate flow rates; and screw compressors, which deliver continuous, oil-free (or oil-injected) compressed air at high flow rates ideal for CNC production environments.
The key specifications are air delivery (CFM — cubic feet per minute — which determines how many simultaneous air consumers can operate at full capacity), working pressure (bar — typical machine tool requirements are 6–8 bar), motor power (HP or kW), and tank capacity (litres, which acts as a buffer for demand peaks). Compressor type — reciprocating vs. screw — affects duty cycle (reciprocating compressors are rated for 50–75% duty cycle; screw compressors run 100% continuously), noise level (screw compressors are far quieter), and maintenance profile.
Machine City stocks used air compressors from Indian manufacturers (Elgi, Kirloskar, Atlas Copco India) and imported machines from Atlas Copco, Ingersoll Rand, and Kaeser. Used compressors at 40–60% of new cost are a sensible choice for shops expanding capacity or replacing a failed unit.

Buyer’s Guide
Add up the CFM demand of every simultaneous air consumer in your shop (CNC machine pneumatics, hand tools, blow guns). Select a compressor delivering at least 20% more CFM than your peak demand.
Most CNC machine tools require 6–7 bar at the machine connection. Verify the compressor delivers rated pressure at rated CFM — a compressor that only hits rated pressure at low flow is undersized for your demand.
Run the motor and listen for bearing noise. Check that the motor starter (star-delta or direct online) functions correctly. Confirm motor amp draw is within nameplate rating under load.
On reciprocating compressors, inspect the cylinder for blow-by (air leaking past the piston on compression). Valve condition is critical — worn intake or delivery valves severely reduce output pressure and increase motor load.
On screw compressors, check the oil level and oil quality. Milky oil indicates water contamination. Ask for the service history of the screw element — element overhaul intervals are typically 20,000–40,000 hours.

Inspect the air receiver tank for corrosion, especially at the lowest point (water collects here). Verify the pressure relief/safety valve lifts at the correct pressure. A corroded tank is a pressure vessel safety hazard.
