Browse used machine vices — plain, precision, hydraulic, self-centering. Various jaw widths. For VMC, milling and drilling. Pan-India.
A machine vice (also called a milling vice or machine vise) is the most common workholding device on VMCs, milling machines, and drill presses. It clamps the workpiece between two parallel jaws — one fixed and one moving — with the moving jaw driven by a screw (manual vice) or hydraulic piston (hydraulic vice). Machine vices are used for all types of prismatic part machining: square and rectangular parts, bar ends, and any workpiece with two parallel clamping faces.
The key specifications on a machine vice are jaw width (which determines the maximum clamping width and the maximum length of clamping face contact), jaw opening (the maximum gap between jaws, which limits part height when clamping vertically), and jaw height (which determines how much of the workpiece projects above the top face of the vice — important for ensuring the cutter clears the vice body on deep cuts). Vice type matters: plain vices are simple and robust; precision vices (also called toolroom vices) feature ground parallel jaw faces and minimal jaw lift for tight-tolerance work; hydraulic vices provide fast, consistent, and programmable clamping force for production environments.
Machine City stocks used machine vices from Gerardi (Italy), Kurt, Schunk, and TE-CO as well as Indian-made vices from Bison and similar manufacturers. Used precision vices from reputable brands in good condition represent excellent value for toolrooms and production shops.

Buyer’s Guide
Confirm the jaw width covers your typical workpiece clamping dimension. A vice that is too narrow provides insufficient contact area; too wide wastes table real estate.
On precision vices, measure jaw lift (upward movement of the moving jaw as it closes). High jaw lift (over 0.02 mm) means the vice will not hold work consistently flat — the part lifts as the vice closes. This is the primary precision spec.
Verify the vice base is flat and parallel to the fixed jaw face. A vice with a twisted or worn base cannot produce square clamped parts even with good jaws.
On manual vices, check the main screw for wear and backlash. A sloppy screw allows the moving jaw to shift under cutting load. The screw nut should be replaceable.
Verify the hydraulic port is undamaged and the clamp mechanism builds full pressure. Hydraulic vices require a shop hydraulic unit or machine tool hydraulic tap — confirm you have the supply pressure.

Inspect the fixed and moving jaw faces for damage (gouges from clamp marks, chipped edges). Replaceable hardened jaw sets are available for most brands; worn or damaged jaws should be replaced before relying on the vice for precision work.
