A DNC (Direct Numerical Control, also called Drip Feed) system is a hardware-software solution that sends CNC part programs from a PC directly to the CNC machine's control in real-time, bypassing the controller's limited internal memory. This is essential for machining large programs (3D surfacing, complex die-mold programs running millions of lines) that exceed what a CNC controller's memory can store. The DNC system feeds the program to the controller line-by-line as the machine executes it, allowing unlimited program size.
Connection type is the defining specification: RS-232 (serial) is the oldest and most compatible method, supported by virtually all CNC controllers from the 1980s to 2000s; Ethernet (LAN) is used on newer controllers (Fanuc 30i, Siemens 840D SL) for fast, high-bandwidth transfer; USB is available on some modern controls for direct flash drive loading (not true drip feed). Some DNC systems support multiple connection types simultaneously, allowing one PC to serve multiple machines on a shop floor.
Machine City stocks used DNC hardware from industrial-grade suppliers. A DNC system is typically sold along with the CNC machine it was connected to, but is also available separately for shops adding drip-feed capability to an existing older machine.

Verify the DNC system's connection type (RS-232, Ethernet, USB) matches your CNC machine's communication port. Older controllers (Fanuc 6M, 11M, 15M, 0M) only support RS-232; newer ones may have Ethernet.
Many DNC software packages run only on specific Windows versions. Confirm the software runs on your chosen PC operating system before purchase.
RS-232 DNC connections use specific null-modem cables with DB9 or DB25 connectors. Confirm the cable is included or can be made from the connector specification.
Modern PCs and laptops often lack a physical RS-232 serial port. A USB-to-RS-232 converter is needed. Not all converters are compatible with all DNC software — test before relying on it in production.
